The only thing your first frost date tells you is when your warm season ends and your cool season begins. You can absolutely continue to garden after your first frost date in the fall or winter and then begin to plant before your last frost date in the late winter or spring.
These dates are not bookends on your gardening season. Let me say that again for the people in the back: You do not have to shut down your garden on your first frost date and wait until your last frost date to plant again. These two dates do not tell you when you can and cannot garden.
